Into the Labyrinth...2001: The American Century has closed with a single Cold-War superpower standing, and a pause in conflict that some dubbed the The End of History. It wasn't. In the Middle East and South Asia, an Islamic revival was underway, while resentment spread due in part to US support for the regions' anti-Soviet tyrannies. Thus erupted a new struggle against the West. Wealthy Saudi fanatic Usama bin Ladin declared holy war against America in 1996 and struck with spectacular terrorist attacks on US targets in East Africa in 1998 and Arabia in 2000.

Bin Ladin's al-Qaeda organization recruited and trained under the protection of an Afghan fundamentalism born of the anti-Soviet Bear Trap of the 1980s. By 2001, al-Qaeda had set in motion even more devastating strikes - this time within the US Homeland - in hopes of igniting a global Muslim uprising. Uprising or not, the West's response to those September 11th attacks would reshape international affairs from London to Jakarta, and from Moscow to Dar es Salaam.

Labyrinth takes 1 or 2 players inside the Islamist jihad and the global  war on terror. With broad scope, ease of play, and a never-ending variety of card combinations similar to GMT Games' Twilight Struggle, Labyrinth portrays both the effort to counter extremist terrorism and the wider ideological struggle - guerilla warfare, regime change, democratization, and more. From the designer of the award winning Wilderness War, Labyrinth combines an emphasis on card-driven game play with multifaceted simulation.

In the 2-player game, one player takes the role of jihadists seeking to exploit world events and Islamic donations to spread fundamentalism. The other as the United States must neutralize terrorist cells while encouraging Muslim reform to cut off extremism at its roots.

Labyrinth features asymmetrical game play and a maze of political, religious, military, and economic events. In the parallel wars of bombs and ideas, international coordination is key - but terrorist opportunities disrupt Western unity are many. The Towers have fallen, but the global struggle has just begun. Let's roll!

Excellent CDG, with an intriguing theme that might not be to everyone's liking. Personally I thought this was a great game of cat and mouse that relentless as it is ruthless. There's no Mr Nice Guy in this game for either side. You have to strike, and strike hard when the time is right. A few things that people have expressed concerns about: Complexity - A significant step up in decision making from Twilight Struggle, took a few plays to 'get' what I was supposed to be doing. Theme - Obviously can be a sensitive topic, and the way it is treated can at times feel heavy handed [from a US perspective] but I didn't think it was unplayable because of the way cards were worded. Randomness - dice rolling is a large part of this game, you set yourself up to do a thing and then if the dice don't roll well it can be crippling. For some this is a bad thing, because it removes the strategy, but it makes each roll tense and invested. Seriously the Rolling is unforgiving. However all that aside the game is dynamic and FUN to play. components are off the chart and the cat and mouse chase aspect is awesome.

Fantastic, plays smoothly with great narrative. I did not enjoy solo play as much as I did face-to-face with an opponent. As a 2 player game, it creates dynamic tension, multiple paths to victory, and overall a very exciting game that leaves you guessing (and second guessing) your opponent's next move. Components are beautiful, and the rules are easy to learn, particularly with a fantastic Playbook to aid in learning the system. A+

The game is good in solitare but having played a lot of 2 player games as both sides, I find the game extremely biased in favour of the jihadists. Any good player will find it easy to unbalance and ultimately defeat the US.

Terrific, fun game - I find I go through phases when I want to play it again and again. Game presents you with "delicious decisions" - you can't do everything you want to do, but you can usually do fun/interesting things, even when you are losing. Given the complexity of the subject matter, does an admirable job of being a simulation while still being a fun game. Plays well solitaire.

Fantastic, fun game. Plays well solitaire or two player. Components top notch. The strategy combined with the cards makes for tense action. Highly recommend if you wish to understand the global implications of the war on terror. Hope they come out with an update for the post-Bin Laden world?

The physical components are terrific and of extraordinarily good quality, the rule-books are well-organized, and the tutorials provide an excellent introduction to a intellectually stimulating system and exciting game. Am in the midst of playing a 3-deck Solitaire run, and having loads of fun! Definitely something for everyone... Several things that may need to be added in future: 1.) Mexico/Latin America: Venzuela, porous Mexican Border, and activity in the 3-borders region makes this neccessary for the game. Mexico could provide another route into the US, even with "Patriot Act" in play. 2.) Iran: should be changed to show: support given by Iran to Jihadists, source of WMD, friction with Israel 3.) "Homegrown terrorists" in EU & US should be more of a factor.

I haven't played this game, I'd just like to point out the huge error on the map since the country marked Serbia is in fact represented by the much larger former Yugoslavia (on the map). The map of the game shows borders that existed 10 years prior to its starting point (2001.). A very curious error for a game that tends to simulate history - although this has no bearing for the gameplay itself.

Volko- This is based on the graphic look of the game. Great effort given the time you've had to push through everything into production. As a graphic designer, it is VERY rarely that I'd give any board game 5 Stars for its graphic design alone [there are a few but I cannot say- it would be unfair to all boardgame designers who generally do a competent job]. It remains to be seen if the 'gameplay' gets the 5 Star nod, but we'll have to wait and see. Look foward to playing it! Regards, Jud.
