The usual high standards in graphics and physical quality. The rules are short and crisp and the system easy to learn and fast to play, which is a must considering the size of the game if it is to be played rather than just admired. A few minor details are a bit srange however. PzIV and V companies have the same ´strength but the batallions do not? Wonder why? The British anti tank units are stronger on the offense than on defense! Very peculiar indeed. The effects of it all is a good simulation of the nature of the Normandy fighting with attrition, limited room for manoeuvre, and still it is fast and above all fun to play.

Great product! Good maps, stunning units, and understandable rules that play fairly simply. I own every Normandy game ever produced-some truly terrible, some mediocre, only a few really good. Danny Holte got this one right! An instant classic...now if I could just get somebody to use this format on a simulation of Kursk 1943! P.S.- Carl, stop whining about "monsters"-the only way that you can get the feel of operational combat right is to use this scale. I suggest you stick with simulations like "Stratego"-though I have some doubts that you'll be able to handle its complexity level...somebody must like monsters, based on how they sell, and their astronomical resale prices on ebay! Years of experience are evident in the graphics and in the streamlined rules, making this a joy to study and much easier to play than previous monster games of D-Day

A product you'd love to be great. You have deluxe material (kudos!) but unnecessary, complicated rules that lacks relevant play-aids. A serious rule update would make it a perfect game - but design team seems conservative.

The best place for questions/discussion is at http://talk.consimworld.com/WebX?[email protected]@.1dd25a9e/4562 On the breakdowns: Those are generic. The MkIV and MkV graphics are only for aesthetics. The Maps: I think it is best to lay C over B.

Great game; however, I am trying the first scenario (Omaha) and having problems with matching Map B over Map C. Seems not to align very well and the invasion “Charlie” space on Map C is a cliff hexside; however, when overlaid with Map B, it becomes a clear hex. Also, the roads do not seem to align very well on the south part of these maps. Has anyone had problems with their Maps aligning properly (primarily Map B & C)? thanks

Good game, but what was the thought process behind making Panther and MkIV breakdown companies the same strengths. That seems to defy reason and does lead one to believe there is a possibility of other off-kilter design abstractions.

I've been played the first scenario over the weekend and it's pretty darn good. Clear rules, nice maps, great charts and good solid support on the ConSim forums by the designer. The scenarios are good and there are more coming out.

I played SPI's Atlantic Wall a lot in the 80s and 90s. We came up with a lot of house rules based on historical research we did. We also researched a 'what if' German reinforcement schedule that assumed the Germans didn't keep the 15th Army out of the battle. Happy to share all this info with the people working on this game

why don't v hv the german symbol as those used in 'the longest day' instead of the nato type on the counters. it may add more chrome n info that make the counters alive n unique.

My only concern is the company size designation on the Brigade and Div HQs.. it can be annoying.. the stacking value shows the size. Other than that .. I can't wait!

Trying to keep my excitement from a GREAT rating!! Finally something to replace (update) The Longest Day! The game looks good and counters are functional....lets hope the stay that way! With GMT's Living rules, the game will benefit even before eratta is issued in expansions. I look forward to this release to fill my war room (that I now share with my teenagers!)!

Shades of the ol' SPI monster games. :) One thing - if you're going to use this much detail, please do something about your ship counters -- that HMS Rodney picture looks nothing like the actual vessel. Historical ship depictions are always a + towards the flavor of the period of the game and towards a greater sense of realism.

Wow! I aggree if it going to be this big some extra detail would be nice on the ships, etc. HOWEVER as I get older I like functional counters. Extra art my look nice but way across a map it makes the counter unreadable.

Just a quick heads-up that an early playtest of this game took place at CSW Expo 2007, and it was very well received. Playability looks very high, and this is Dan's second crack at a Normandy game design, which bodes well also.

The Battle for Normandy is a game that represents the climactic campaign in Normandy from D-Day, 6 June 1944 to the first week of August 1944 at primarily battalion level. Numerous scenarios are included to play out various smaller battles in Normandy. It is intended for two players or player teams.
The game uses a unique sequence of play and a system of fire combat throughout the airdrop and beach assault phases with company-level breakdown units, then a more traditional odds-type combat approach throughout the rest of the game. Initial beach defense deployments at start and daily air support and defense allocations, hidden to the opposing player; create a level of uncertainty that makes for a tense, challenging duel.

The game combines a detailed, extensively researched order of battle with relatively fast-playing game mechanics to make it not only the largest representation of the Normandy campaign available to date, but a manageable one that is meant to be played, not shelved. Scenarios include: (As of March 11, 2008 - we are working on a couple more):

    • Campaign : 5 maps, 6 June - 10 Aug
    • Bloody Omaha : part of one map, 6 June - 10 June
    • Cobra : 2 maps (most of play on one though), 25 July - 31 July
    • Goodwood & Cobra (combined): 4 maps, 18 July - 31 July
    • Operation Epsom : 1 map, 26 June - 1 July
    • The Battle for Cherbourg : 1 map, 18 June - 27 June

A future expansion will extend the play area south, to include the Mortain and Falaise scenarios, and extend the campaign to late August and the 3rd Army breakout.
