BLUE vs GRAY: THE CIVIL WAR CARD GAME

	HOW TO SET UP A GAME Begin by reading through the board setup section. Jump down to the close ups and click back to return to your section in the board setup. The other section, deploying cards will come in handy when the game begins. It describes the crucial theater divisions. When you've through the play area set up, you're ready to go, move on to the ORDER OF PLAY page to take you through the steps of a turn. Click here for a PRINTER FRIENDLY version of this document.
	BOARD SETUP ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Start by clearing a 3 foot by 3 foot flat space to use as a board. (See CLOSE UP # 1 for an image of a fully laid out game board.) ~ ~ ~ Next place the AT START Map Cards in the center of the play area. It is IMPORTANT to make sure the map's printing faces the Southern Player. (See CLOSE UP # 2 for an image of the 4 AT START Map Cards.) ~ ~ ~ Now put the Supply card and the Combat Results card in the lower right-hand corner of your respective side of the board. (See CLOSE UP # 3 for an image of a game board.) ~ ~ ~ Place your decks in the center of your respective sides of the map. ~ ~ ~ Leave some space (one card width) between your deck and the map, as it will be the place for your Cadre during the game. (See CLOSE UP # 4) ~ ~ ~ As cards are discarded, place them in a row (face up) above the Combat & Supply cards in your lower right-hand corner.	DEPLOYING CARDS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ EASTERN THEATER deployments, for both players, are placed on the "eastern" side of the deck and the Cadre. By "eastern" we mean the side that corresponds to the Eastern half of the map (i.e., the half with Washington and Richmond). For the USA player, that will be their left side, for the CSA player it will be their right. (See CLOSE UP # 5) ~ ~ ~ WESTERN THEATER deployments, for both players, are placed on the "western" side of the deck and the Cadre. By "western" we mean the side that corresponds to the Western half of the map (i.e., the half with Kentucky and the Mississippi). For the USA player that will be their right side, for the CSA player it will be their left. (See CLOSE UP # 6) ~ ~ ~ NORTHERN NAVAL UNITS are deployed into the notches that are created between Map Cards B & E (in the Eastern Theater) and Map cards A & C (in the Western Theater.) (See CLOSE UP # 7) (Please note that it is permissible to deploy a Western Naval Unit before Map Card C is played.) ~ ~ ~ Go on the ORDER OF PLAY page to start playing.

In a fully developed game such as this, notice how almost all available space is needed for deployments.	.	The AT START Map Cards were initially placed much closer to the Northern Player because as new Map Cards are drawn, the map grows toward the Southern Player. Back to How to Set Up a Game

Note the 5 CSA cards in the Cadre, 3 commanders and 2 Divisions, tuned sideways beneath the map and just above the deck.	.	Stonewall Jackson's command can be just barely seen along the right edge.

Note the natural notches that are created on the Northern player's side between Map Cards B & E (in the Eastern Theater) and Map Cards A & C (in the Western Theater).	.	If a second naval unit is deployed in either the Eastern Theater or the Western Theater, it should be stacked above or below the unit already there, so both units are clearly visible. (Look in the Western Theater of CLOSE UP # 1 to view a second navel unit deployed in the same theater.)
Please note that Porter (the card on the left) is deployed in the Eastern Theater, and Foote (the card on the right) is deployed in the Western Theater.		Back to How to Set Up a Game
