update includes two new P500 additions, updated charging and shipping info, an
updated Production Outlook, plus news tidbits and Inside-GMT stuff in this
column. I hope you enjoy it.
on the Production Outlook
going to take a little space this month to give you a few more details on our
thinking about some of the production outlook items.
off, I want to say a big THANK YOU to you guys who responded to our plea to help
us with orders for the reprint games, especially the CDGs. Because of your
response, we are going to be able to get some of those games reprinted this
let's just talk about reprints for a minute. Right now, we have priorities for
reprints, which generally means we will do everything possibile to make sure we
keep these highest-priority games in stock. Sometimes we just don't have the
funds to accomplish this, but that's our aim. The priority list isn't precise,
but it roughly looks like this:
Commands & Colors Series
Combat Commander Series
Card Driven Games
Deluxe Alexander and SPQR
here's where we are with these at present:
We have very few Twilight Struggle left in
stock, but already have a reprint set up and should have a large shipment back
in stock in 2Q.
We've recently reprinted Dominant Species and a
bunch of stuff from both the C&C and CC series', including all the base
games. We should be in good shape on these now.
Card-Driven Games. This is the one we're going to be working on
next. We're looking at 4Q this year to do somewhere between 2-5 CDGs. Funding
will determine what we can do, but we're going to shoot for all 5 if at all
possible, to get them all done at once. The five games are (just click the link
if you'd like more info or to order):
Empire of the Sun
For the People
Paths of Glory
Deluxe Alexander and SPQR: The massive, expanded edition of Deluxe Alexander is
printing in 2Q. SPQR is going to have to
wait, for now.
Everything Else. Fields of Fire, 2nd
Edition, will definitely reprint along with the Fields of Fire II: With the Old
Breed in 3Q. Other reprints that are on our radar screen, but might not make
it this year, unless we make enough from operations to fund them:
Normandy '44 and Ukraine '43. Mark is
actively working on these, especially the Ukraine game, which includes quite a
few improvements. But they're after the CDGs in priority.
Conquest of Paradise 2nd
Edition. This is one I personally want to see reprinted as quickly as we can
make it happen. I think that, given the mounted board and higher-quality pieces
and our increased market presence in the Eurogame space over the past few years,
this game could sell really well for us.
Pax Romana - It's possible
but not yet likely that we could perhaps get this reprinted in the 4Q when we
print Genesis. The order numbers
are there, but the development isn't yet finished. We'll update you as we get
As I talked over these reprints with Mark Simonitch today, we also discussed
getting the East Front Series (EFS)
back in print. Vance is in CPA mode now until April, but after that we're going
to work with him and Tony to plan on getting that series - and it's updated
versions - back on our production radar.

below for a full list of games)
Delays. Thunder Alley and Panzer Expansion 3 are
getting pushed back slightly into April. Tony called me today and told me the
ship isn't docking in Oakland before end of March as we'd previously thought, so
these both slip by a couple weeks.
Quarter: Everything in that group looks pretty solid. The exception
MIGHT be Fire in the Lake (we have
everything "good to go" in Pre-Press except the playbook, which takes a while to
complete and proof), but if it slips it should still be early 3Q. This is our
lightest quarter for releases this year, although the addition of the Deluxe Alexander reprint
and 4th Quarter: The thing I want to highlight here is that we've
added quite a few games that are not yet at the 500 threshold, or just barely
above. Most of these are games that have been on the list for a long time, and
we just want to get them printed because a) we know they are good games, and b)
we want to help the designers, so they can get some royalties for their patience
know that a lot of you don't order until late in the P500 process, but these
games are really going to need some help from you guys, so I'd encourage you to
please take a hard look at these 3Q and 4Q games and place orders for the ones
you know you're going to want. That'll help us a lot as we plan cash flow (and
we know we may just have to use reserve funds to get some of these printed) for
for all your help and support to the P500 program!
Designers, Developers and
Testers occasionally post updates on line. I want to start pointing some of
these out to you guys, as I find them interesting and informative. Here are a
few recent ones that caught my eye:
Designer Lee Brimmicombe-Wood is hard at work on a new air series - titled
Wing Leader. He's been testing and sharing details
recently on Consimworld. Here are some sample counters and a data card. Look for
Wing Leader on P500 later this year.
1989 Co-Designer Ted Torgerson recently spoke at Franklin College about
"Gaming the Fall of Communism. He used 1989
as an example. Here's
the whole story, from BGG
not a lot to add since my January update. Here are a few items to note:
I see coming together pretty quickly is the Dominant
Species new edition for iPad. I should have some images to show
you guys next time. Suffice to say that the guys at Virtual Atomics are knocking
themselves out to get us major improvements to the AI, graphics and sounds, and
the tactile game experience, while also giving us multi-player. This should be
worth the wait.
other fronts, Mitch continues to work with the Twilight Struggle team. I'm
not ready to share details on that yet, but suffice to say we're not ready for
release. I may well have some information for you before the next update, and if
I do, we'll do a special update blast to let you know progress.
for your support of our pre-order launch for Nightfighter for PC and
iPad. The PC orders are about 150 so far - a good start. We'll keep you
updated as development progresses.
of you have asked about the Commands and Colors games with Playdek. I have a
meeting with Joel at Playdek next week. I'm not sure I'll be able to share what
we talk about, but if I can, I will. Suffice to say for now that we are
communicating and moving forward on that front.
I noted last time, we do have other games in development that we'll tell you
about once we have playable alpha versions in hand.
that we ARE actively looking for iOS development partners. Even if they were
devoted to doing all GMT games (which of course they aren't), there's no way
just a few partners, even those the size of Playdek, could create the number of
games we'd like to get to tablets. One decision we've made internally, though,
is that we're pretty much through working with start-ups that haven't done this
before (the ones we're already working with we're keeping, don't worry!). We'd
like to add relationships with a few more EXPERIENCED companies to get both
individual games (Urban Sprawl, Sekigahara, Conquest of Paradise, Leaping
Lemmings, and Thunder Alley, for starters) and series games (Combat Commander,
COIN, Fields of Fire, FAB Series, and our CDGs, for example) that are
appropriate for tablets onto the market.
if you know of a company that's done quality work on tablets that is looking for
a content-partner (or if you work in such a company), please encourage them to
contact me at [email protected]
again for all your support and patience as we work to create GMT games for your
PCs and tablets!
I just want to take a minute, on the day we add a new
ConsimPress game to our P500 list, to encourage you guys to support John Kranz
and ConsimPress. I met John shortly after we started GMT way back in 1990. I
fondly remember flying down to Phoenix for quite a few weekends staying with
John and playing games with the large and active group that met in the Apple
Computer building on Saturdays. And I remember his flying up to Hanford and
sleeping on my couch while he helped me finish the rulebook for Crisis: Korea
1995 over 20 years ago.
Most of you probably know him as the creator of
ConsimWorld, an online meeting place for wargamers and a terrific communications
resource for the wargaming community.
Whether leading a gaming group or a popular online
community, whether running his own company or jumping in to help other companies
when they had a need, John has been stellar, over the years, in his support of
the gaming community. And now he has his own game company, one that's already
provided us with well-crafted, engaging games. So I just want to say "let's
support John and ConsimPress the way he has supported us over the years." Yeah,
I guess this is me asking you to buy someone else's games! :-)
So while you're taking a look at Silent Victory today, I'd
encourage you to look at the other two games John currently has on the P500
list: Bear's Claw and The Hunters 2nd Printing.
And when you get a minute, check out the ConsimPress website. I
think you'll be impressed with what a first-class organization John is
