Africanus recreates the two major battles fought in Spain by Rome's first great field commander, Publius Cornelius Scipio, later given the cognomen Africanus for his victory at Zama. Scipio is the first cog in the wheel that evolved the Roman army away from its highly linear velites-hastati-principes system to a more sectional and individual approach that would eventually become the cohort system of the age of Marius. His overseas victories and conquests also opened Rome's eyes to the possibilities of empire.
